The Connection Between Fluoride & Acne

Is Fluoride Contributing To Your Acne?

In the ongoing quest to understand acne, a condition that affects millions worldwide, the role of diet and environmental factors often comes to the forefront.

One factor that hasn’t gained as much attention as it deserves is fluoride, as researched in Melissa Gallico's insightful book, "The Hidden Cause of Acne,". This article delves into the intimate connection between acne and both the ingestion and topical absorption of fluoride, as explored in Gallico's research.

Fluoride: A Common but Controversial Element

Fluoride, a naturally occurring mineral, is widely used in public water supplies for dental health and is present in various dental products. However, its ubiquitous presence has raised concerns, especially regarding its potential link to acne.

The Acne-Fluoride Connection

Gallico's book is a groundbreaking exploration of how fluoride can be a hidden culprit behind acne. She posits that the ingestion and topical absorption of fluoride can trigger or exacerbate acne in certain individuals. This hypothesis stems from the observation that some people develop acne that is resistant to conventional treatments but improves when fluoride exposure is reduced.

Ingestion of Fluoride

The ingestion of fluoride, primarily through drinking water and consumption of foods and beverages made with fluoridated water, can lead to its accumulation in the body. In sensitive individuals, this accumulation may trigger an inflammatory response in the skin, manifesting as acne.

Topical Absorption and its Impact

Apart from ingestion, fluoride can also be absorbed topically through the skin. This is particularly concerning with dental products and fluoridated water. Regular exposure to fluoride in showers, baths, and through fluoride-rich toothpaste and mouthwashes could potentially contribute to skin inflammation and acne in certain individuals.

Individual Susceptibility and Genetic Factors

Gallico's research suggests that individual susceptibility plays a significant role in fluoride-related acne. Genetic and nutritional factors might determine how one's body processes and reacts to fluoride. This variability could explain why some individuals are more prone to fluoride-induced acne than others.

Fluoride Detoxification and Acne Improvement

An intriguing aspect of Gallico's work is the anecdotal evidence linking fluoride detoxification to acne improvement. Numerous case studies in her book show significant skin improvement in individuals who actively reduce their fluoride intake and exposure.

A Call for Further Research

While "The Hidden Cause of Acne" sheds light on a potentially overlooked factor in acne development, it also underscores the need for further scientific research. Establishing a more definitive link between fluoride and acne requires more extensive studies and clinical trials.

So what steps should be taken to reduce fluoride?

At the dentist, you can opt out of the fluoride swish. You can choose fluoride free toothpaste.

As far as drinking water, I recommend reverse osmosis filtration & adding minerals back so you can properly absorb & utilize it.

You will also want to filter the water that gets absorbed through your skin. I recommend investing in a faucet filter (so important!) as well as a shower filter and if you’re like me and you love hot baths, a ball filter. This faucet filter was an absolute game-changer for my own acne journey— one that had haunted me from the ages of 12-30. It is a must-have for anyone with acne.
